Looking for Millennial talent for your magazine? Check out Ed2010

Where to focus, what to spend, who to hire? These are the questions publishers are asking in preparation for 2010. They could find some answers, at least for the hiring piece, from Ed2010, a job search resource for up-and-coming magazine journalists and j-school students.

Ed2010 was founded by Chandra Turner in 1998, when she and ten or so of her fellow editors shared industry buzz and job opportunities, seeking to land their “dream editorial jobs” by the year 2010. It has since grown into an online presence known for its WhisperJobs job board, mentoring services and workshops.

Publishers take note: If you're looking for hotshot Millennials to shepherd your digital projects, or just looking to inject some new blood into your editorial staffs, try tipping off WhisperJobs about your internship opportunities.

I mentioned to Turner that I think recruitment and digital media training for editors will be a hot topic in the coming year. Emerging journalists have been asking for digital training more and more, according to Turner, who is now the executive editor of Parents magazine (and yes, it is her dream job). “We respond to the demands of the Edsters,” she said.

As we approach the end of the decade, the burning question for me is: Will Ed2010 change its name?

People have been asking that question for years, Turner said, noting that the “2010” part of the logo has been rendered increasingly smaller over the last few years to de-emphasize it, and the “Ed” part was made more prominent about six years ago. Someone even suggested changing the name to “Ed20TK” but the name is already a mouthful, she said. I suggested “EdTK”—she just laughed.

“We haven't had the balls,” Turner answered, when I asked her why she hasn't dropped the 2010 already. “But we only have a few days left to decide.” She might even leave it as Ed2010 throughout the year 2010. So, when will we know?

Check the site on January 1st, she told me. I suggested that she be sure to check her analytics that day.
